Author Alexander Wolff’s grandfather, the renowned book publisher Kurt Wolff, fled the Nazis. Alex’s father Niko, left behind, fought for them. Steven Sinding joins Alex in conversation about his journey to Berlin to unravel the many transnational and intergenerational aspects of his family’s story and their implications for our times.

GUEST SPEAKER:

Alexander Wolff is a journalist, author, and editor. After 36 years as a writer for Sports Illustrated, he now works out of a converted cow barn in Vermont’s Champlain Valley, mostly writing and editing books. He is the author or co-author of seven books about basketball. In March 2021 Atlantic Monthly Press and Grove UK published Endpapers: A Family Story of Books, War, Escape, and Home, with DuMont Buchverlag of Cologne releasing a German edition in Fall 2021. He loves to interact with readers, collaborate on events with bookstores, book clubs, libraries, and festivals, and otherwise affirm and spread literary culture. Books are in the family blood. And he enjoys talking with anyone about writing and the writing life, as well as that sweet spot where sports and society overlap.

Steven Sinding was the director general of the International Planned Parenthood Federation in London. He had a 20-year career at the U.S. Agency for International Development and served as senior population advisor to the World Bank and later as director of the Population Sciences program at the Rockefeller Foundation. He was clinical professor of public health at Columbia University. Dr. Sinding serves on a number of boards and works as an international consultant. He has lectured for GMALL and is a regular moderator for its Weekly Roundtable discussion group.
